Will Taylor Hicks be next on American Idol?

Taylor, McPhee, Chris Daughtry and Elliott Yamin are set to take on the camp standards of Elvis Presley tonight (at 8 on WFXT, Ch. 25). It could be the first episode of the Fox talent show in which there’s as much howling at home as there is onscreen. Which contestant is most apt to wear Elvis’ trademark white sequined jumpsuit? Right.
As judge Simon Cowell said, Hicks’ talents are better suited for a wedding singer.
Still, if the votes for the last two weeks are any indication, Yamin is the one who’s in trouble. He has demonstrated range, superior song choice and has improved over the competition, but he suffers in the charisma department.
It was no surprise to learn last week that he chews his fingernails; what is surprising is that he’s managed to stop at the nail bed and not gnaw his fingers off. The guy is a bundle of nerves in a nice suit and a loose tie.
McPhee is a sleek Kelly Clarkson. We already have one of those, so why would we want another?
The competition would seem to be Daughtry’s to lose - and he just might. His voice is failing him, he acknowledged after his rendition last week of ‘‘I Dare You.” Daughtry needs to find a way to pace himself if he is going to win the ‘‘Idol” crown.
Nevertheless, Daughtry, McPhee and Yamin deserve to be in ‘‘Idol’s” Top Three. The question is, to what lengths will Hicks go to top himself - maybe crowd surfing tonight? - to power up that hypnotic spell over America and steal a spot.
