Google SMS
The boffins at Google are unleashing Google News on mobile phones - and SMS services, too!
Google News has gone mobile, quietly undraping a new service designed to let mobile phone users (with XHTML handsets) carry the news of the world in their pocket.
The beta service is US only right now, though the firm says it’s “exploring opportunities to make the service available in other international markets”. A smart searchable news index appears on your handset and can be browsed by topic. Listed pages are “limited to those optimized for mobile phones”, the company’s UK product manager, Jason Cook, told T3 last night. Good for quick headline updates on the move the service delivers “a very similar experience to Google’s Web service - but on a smaller screen”, he said. The service is free (though your network data charges apply, as ever). Jason rejected suggestions its news service gives Google a grip on the news agenda, saying: “The one message I have is that we don’t syndicate content, we simply show it.”
