WiFi Laptop Theft on Rise
San Francisco police say cafes offering wireless Internet access have become fertile grounds for robbers making off with pricey laptop computers.San Francisco police statistics show a steady increase in laptop robberies involving confrontations between robbers and their victims. Last year, there were 48 reported, compared to 18 in 2004. As of the end of March, 18 had been reported this year.Some San Francisco cafes have responded by installing security leashes for laptops and posting employees at the doors. Police said a leash would prevent some thefts, but he cautioned computer users that resisting a determined robber could be risky.
